Putting down beloved dogs caused nightmares
By Gabriele Muellenberg
Putting down our beloved 2 dogs was a hard decision. Little did I know, it would have repercussions. Why did we go ahead with it? We were desperate. We wanted to emigrate from South Africa to Spain. The vet who knew our dogs well told us, putting them down would be the best solution for all of us, as the dogs were old. He was aware of the fact that traveling by plane from South Africa to Spain would be too much trauma for them. The flight would not have been a direct one. The dogs would have been transferred several times. Also, the new home we had found overseas, was inadequate for dogs, who were used to roam around on our 10 000 square meter private grounds. One of the dogs was a so called dog of all sorts, who may have been 14 years old. She was a heavy, partly Labrador, Doberman and Bullmastiff mix. A lovely, but cunning and very intelligent dog... She was rather my daughter's dog and playmate. You may guess, how she felt about putting the dogs down… The other dog was a blue Great Dane of 13 years of age. She was my son’s dog but, was also my steady companion over many years. The great Dane once caught a tick, which caused Liquiosis, a disease, which may be fatal. She recovered by good veterinary care, but seemed to have stomach problems from time to time, ever since. To take a dog like that to Europe implied an additional risk. My son could also not find a better solution than putting the dogs down. Don't ask how we all felt on that day with the date set to putting them down, eventually... Much happened later. My husband passed away unexpectedly. But the worst was still to come. Now, I sometimes have terrible nightmares of the day, when the dogs were put down. What could be the only conclusion to this? Don't ever emigrate, when you have beloved dogs, you cannot take with you!

Contributor's Note
I miss my dogs very much. However, I am very reluctant to have even a tiny dog now.

That would be awful. Too bad you didn't have friends or neighbors who could have taken them in. I hope you can get over the pain though and maybe find another pet to love.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Thank you Mulberry, there certainly will be a time again for new pets to love. I am lucky that I don't need happy pills like a friend of mine who is still traumatized by death. But we all get depressions from it on and off. There is not much difference that they may be caused by the loss of loved pets or family.
